Here’s Rugby School, which lives in the eponymous town in Warwickshire in the English Midlands. It was founded in 1567 and is a co-educational public school for both day and boarding pupils whose parents can afford the startling fees. A public school is, for the benefit of most of us what, would be called a private school anywhere else.
It has a claim to fame, and the goalposts are a clue. It is said, and attested by a plaque in the school, that in 1823 a schoolboy, William Webb Ellis, with a fine disregard for the football rules as they were at the time, first picked up the ball and ran with it, thus initiating rugby football and consequently American football.
Sadly, it’s not true.
But that’s not why we’re here.
If you’re a pupil and you’re over 16 you can imbibe alcoholic refreshments at the weekends in the school’s own bar, the Crescent Club.
Try that at 16, Americans.

It is, but only in a licensed premises. 16 and 17 year olds can drink wine, beer or cider with a meal if it’s bought by an adult.
The Crescent Club is a private club so I guess different rules apply.

You have to be 18 to buy alcohol onor from licenced premises however a person from 12 year old upwards can consume alcohol outside namely in the beer garden, bought for them by an individual of 18 year old upwards.
